How To Clean a Thermostatic Control Valve Cartridge

  1. Using a pair of channel locks, grasp the cartridge at the top and bottom. Do not grasp by the rubber gaskets as this will damage them and cause leaks. Loosen by turning the locks against each other. Once loosened, the top and bottom can be unthreaded by hand.
  2. When done unthreading, the top and bottom can be separated. Disassemble as shown, taking care not to drop, lose, or damage any parts.
  3. Gently remove the locking clip at the top. If unable to remove by hand, use a small flat-head screwdriver or needle-nosed pliers.
  4. Once clip is removed, you can push or tap out shaft as shown.
  5. Unthread the shaft into two parts.
  6. Use a brush and a solvent to thoroughly clean the cartridge. Do not use too strong of a solvent as it could melt the rubber gaskets.
  7. These are all the parts of the cartridge, make sure you have all of them. Lubricate all the parts and assemble the cartridge in the reverse order it was disassembled.
